Score Requirements

The University requires the following minimum scores in each area to be considered for admission: TOEFL minimum of 80 (iBT - internet based) with no sub-score less than 17, or 550 on the paper-based test; IELTS minimum score of 6.5 with no sub-score below 6.5 for Reading, 5.5 for Writing, 5.5 for Speaking, and 6.0 for Listening. Additionally, the English as a Second Language program conducts a review of each matriculated student upon arrival to determine individual needs for English instruction to support success in their chosen degree program.

Admission Procedure

After the application for admission and transcripts have been favorably reviewed by faculty, the Graduate Office will send the applicant an official notification of admission to graduate study.

Applying to our online M.S. Educational Leadership program is easy. Below is a breakdown of the required materials that must accompany your application.

Our M.S. Educational Leadership program has a rolling admissions process with entry into the program in fall and spring semesters. This means you can apply at any point during the year.

In accordance with the requirements of the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE), a school counseling applicant must have earned a grade point average (GPA) of at least a 2.8 for their last 48 credits. Upon receiving the applicant's transcripts, Duquesne university calculates the applicant's GPA, and notifies the applicant if the GPA is below 2.8. Those applicants who have earned at least a 2.8 but less than a 3.0 GPA for their last 48 credits, must submit either the GRE or MAT scores with their application.

3.0 GPA*

*Applicants are customarily expected to have a 3.0 grade point average, based on a four-point scale, in their undergraduate work. However, exceptions may be granted on a limited basis, in which there is substantial additional evidence of a student's academic competency.

CACREP Requirements
The Council for Accreditation for Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) has the following requirements for doctoral students:

  • Master's degree in counseling or a closely related field
  • Completed coursework in the CACREP common core areas, which include: 1) Professional Identity, 2) Social and Cultural Diversity, 3) Human Growth and Development, 4) Career Development, 5) Helping Relationships, 6) Group Work, 7) Assessment, and 8) Research and Program Evaluation
  • Completed coursework in a CACREP specialty area (e.g., addictions counseling, clinical mental health counseling, rehabilitation counseling, school counseling, etc.)

Applicants who have not graduated from a CACREP master's program, or who have a master's in psychology, social work, or a related field, are to mail or e-mail an unofficial copy of their master's transcript to the Program Director, who will review the transcript to identify what additional coursework is needed to satisfy CACREP prerequisites.

Admissions Information

Applications are currently being accepted for the cohort that will begin their studies in July 2025. A maximum of twelve students will be admitted into the Cohort of 2028.

Admission into the Ed.D. in Educational Leadership program is based on academic qualifications, appropriate experience and application packet quality. Admission decisions are made without regard to race, ethnicity, religion, disability, age, gender or sexual orientation.

Admission Criteria

  • A master’s degree in education or related field from an accredited institution.
  • A minimum 3.0 GPA for the last 30 credits of graduate work.
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice leadership and disposition towards community engagement.
  • Five years of educational experience in schools, universities, and/or community settings is preferred but not required.

  • Sunday, February 2, 2025—Completed applications must be submitted by 11:59 PM (EST).
  • Monday, February 3, 2025
    • The Admissions Committee begins its review of completed applications.
    • Selected applicants will be invited to participate in a 30-minute virtual interview with the Program Director and at least one faculty member. Invitations are based on evidence from completed admission packets that demonstrate qualifications, experience and potential program fit. Each applicant will be asked the same series of questions meant to showcase experiences, insights and philosophies related to educational leadership and personal career goals. Please note: Not all applicants will be invited to interview. 
    • Using information gathered from the application packet review and Zoom interviews, the Admissions Committee will invite selected applicants to attend a virtual group interview to explore the program while demonstrating their program fit.
  • Saturday, March 1, 2025—The virtual group interview will be held on this day. All invited applicants are strongly advised to attend.
  • Mid-March 2025—The Program Director will notify applicants selected for admission by personal phone call. These applicants will have ten days to accept the invitation to join the cohort and make their non-refundable deposit of $250.00. This deposit is applied directly to the tuition for first-semester classes.
  • Applications received after February 2, 2025 may be considered on a rolling basis if slots remain available in the cohort. Those who submit by the February 2 deadline will be considered for graduate assistantships and other supportive funding before late applicants.
  • June 2025 —The Ed.D. New Student Orientation will be held in this month. The exact date will be determined soon.
  • July 14, 2025—The Ed.D. program begins for new students.

Application Materials

The following materials must be submitted with the Duquesne graduate application by February 2, 2025 to be considered by the Admissions Committee:

  • Official graduate transcripts from all institutions of higher learning attended, sent directly from the university registrar, emailed to Graduate Admissions. We are unable to accept transcripts sent directly from applicants.
  • A current CV or resume that highlights recent accomplishments relevant to educational leadership and doctoral work.

Essay Requirements

Each essay should be no more than 750 words and organized with double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font. Include a cover page with each essay that contains the type of essay (Personal Essay or Educational Essay) your name, contact information and date. Information on the cover page does not count toward the word limit for the essay.

Essays are scrutinized for plagiarism. Your statements should be written by you alone and represent your original work. An essay found to contain plagiarized work will disqualify the applicant. Additionally, you are not permitted to use generative AI to write your essays. International applicants are reminded that they must write their own statements in English; the use of translators is not permitted.

The Admissions Committee will carefully consider both quality of the content and the writing when reviewing your statements and assessing your application for the Ed.D. in Educational Leadership program. We are looking at your potential to engage in doctoral level writing, not necessarily for you to already possess these skills.

ESSAY ONE: Personal Essay

To help us better understand your professional goals for joining the Ed.D. in Educational Leadership program, please respond to the following two prompts:

You must use APA style to cite several pieces of supporting research within the body of your Educational Essay. To help us better understand your potential to discern educational environments and frame issues of equity and justice, please respond to the following prompts:

  1. What is a current outcome in the field of education (broadly defined as K12, higher education, and/or community contexts) that you see as problematic?
  2. Discuss two factors that you see as contributors to that issue. Please utilize relevant sources as evidence to your claims.

Successful applicants are invited to an on campus interview.

Faculty members then consider all application materials and interview information to make admission offers. With an admissions offer, the student will then enroll in classes for the upcoming fall semester. The Program does not engage in "rolling admissions."

Final decisions are made by April 15 of each year.

  1.  Prepare a letter of interest to upload into the online application. A letter of intent describes educational, professional, research, and personal experiences that have resulted in an applicant's interests to pursue a career in school psychology, specifically pursue a Ph.D. in school psychology, and consider the Â鶹ֱ²¥ Ph.D. School Psychology Program in particular. The letter of interest should also outline an applicant's career goals so that the faculty may judge the match between the applicant's goals and the stated goals and competencies of the Ph.D. Program. Applicants should be certain to cover his or her research experience and research interests as these are carefully evaluated by the Program faculty when reviewing applications for the Ph.D. program as it is in part a research-oriented degree.
  2. Prepare a curriculum vita/resume to upload into the online application.
  3. All official undergraduate and graduate transcripts should be sent by your university to the Office of Graduate Admissions (address below). Please see Transcript Credential Evaluation Section below.
  4. The submission of GRE scores is optional. GRE scores obtained within 5 years of the date of application can be sent to Â鶹ֱ²¥. Please contact ETS to have your official GRE scores sent to Â鶹ֱ²¥- Institutional Code #2196. Note it takes 7-10 days for Â鶹ֱ²¥ to receive your score after your order from ETS.
  5. Â鶹ֱ²¥ requires submission of TOEFL or IELTS scores for all non-native English-speaking applicants. Additionally, the English as a Second Language Program conducts a review of each matriculated student upon arrival to determine individual needs for English instruction to support success in his/her degree program. The University requires the following minimum scores in each area to be considered for admission: TOEFL minimum of 80 (internet based) with no sub-score less than 17, or 550 on the paper-based test; IELTS minimum score of 6.5 with no sub-score below 6.5 for Reading, 5.5 for Writing, 5.5 for Speaking, and 6.0 for Listening. Change of Degree Programs

If a student would like to change degree sequences, the student must complete a new application and follow all application guidelines for the desired degree program. It is not permissible for students simply to elect to change or migrate between School Psychology Program degree sequences without making a formal application. In the case where a current student is accepted into a new degree program, the student's program of study will be reviewed with the student's advisor to ensure that the future course of study will meet the requirements of the new degree sequence.

International Applicants

English Proficiency Requirements

Â鶹ֱ²¥ requires submission of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or Duolingo English Test (DET) scores for all non-native English-speaking applicants who attended a university outside of the United States.

Transcript Credit Evaluation

If your transcript(s) is from an institution located outside of the United States, you must use a transcript credential evaluation service to obtain a course-by-course report.

Admission Requirements

  • 3.0 GPA*
  • Graduates with a bachelor's degree from an accredited college, university or seminary and a teaching certificate will be considered for admission.
Admission decisions are based primarily on the applicant's previous academic record as shown by official transcripts.

  • A resume that documents competence and effectiveness in professional work
  • One Letter of Recommendation prior to acceptance
    • Name and email address of recommender are needed
    • Recommender will receive an email prompting them to upload their recommendation for the applicant
    • Recommendation must be from individual who can speak about the applicant's academic/professional abilities (i.e. administrator/supervisor recommendation)
    • Note: Family, friends, and professional colleagues are not acceptable references

After the application for admission and transcripts have been favorably reviewed by faculty, the Graduate Office will send the applicant official.

International Applicants

Â鶹ֱ²¥ requires submission of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) scores for all non-native English-speaking applicants who attended a university outside of the United States.

Score Requirements

The University requires the following minimum scores in each area to be considered for admission: TOEFL minimum of 80 (iBT - internet-based) with no sub-score less than 17, or 550 on the paper-based test; IELTS minimum score of 6.5 with no sub-score below 6.5 for Reading, 5.5 for Writing, 5.5 for Speaking, and 6.0 for Listening.

Additionally, the English as a Second Language program conducts a review of each matriculated student upon arrival to determine individual needs for English instruction to support success in their chosen degree program

    • The 50% Tuition Scholarship is offered to undergraduate, full-time, first-year, and transfer students in the School of Education beginning Fall 2023.

    This scholarship ranges from $5,000 to $10,000 for eligible first-year students enrolling in our School of Education beginning in the summer or fall of 2025. Deadline to apply: January 15, 2025. Apply for this scholarship.

This Lay Teacher award does not apply to the doctoral programs. Only one Â鶹ֱ²¥ degree may be earned under this reduced tuition program.
