As a student at Duquesne in Rome, you will experience:

Expand your horizons in the Emerald Isle with a semester studying at the University College Dublin (UCD)—one of the world’s top universities. You’ll live in UCD’s state of the art residence halls with students from around Ireland and the world and have access to some of the best neighborhoods in Dublin.  With a student population of more than 35,000 students, you’ll get to experience one of Ireland’s largest and most prestigious universities.

Just 6 kilometers—about 3.5 miles—from Dublin’s lively city center, you’ll be just minutes from the action. You’ll also have easy access to locations throughout Ireland, the United Kingdom and Europe.

What is a Spring Break Away Course?

Spring Break Aways are the first opportunity a student can study abroad offering spring classes that travel over the week of spring break.  Each course will meet on campus for regular Spring semester classes, with the early weeks of study preceding Spring Break preparing you to take full advantage of your week at the international site. Upon returning from your spring break abroad, your studies will continue and include a project or paper based upon your international study experience.

The study tour will travel as a group under the guidance of your professor.  All travel arrangements will be arranged prior to departure and will include airfare, land transportation, hotels site admissions and many meals. 

Spring Break Away students will:

  • Take a 3-credit course, taught on campus, embedding international material into your studies for the entire spring semester. 
  • Participate in a faculty-led study tour during spring break, March 1-9, 2025.
  • Commit to participating in and paying for the spring break study tour component, an integral part of the academic course.
  • Plan on paying a total of $3,600 which includes flight, accommodations, excursions, tours as well as most all meals.

Earn 6-Credits with our Maymester Programs

Maymester programs are one way students can study abroad over the summer.  These unique programs offer students the opportunity to learn with Duquesne Faculty while living abroad.  Past Maymester programs have taken nursing students to Rome, health science students to Dublin, education majors to Finland as well as offering programs open to all majors traveling to Africa.  Each Fall new programs are announced.

Maymester students will:

  • Earn 6 academic credits while exploring a different culture with Duquesne Faculty.
  • Live abroad with Duquesne Students for 3-4 weeks starting in early May and ending in June.
  • Plan on program costs that are inclusive of flight, academic credits, accommodations, all cultural activities and most meals.
  • Get a passport, your ticket to study abroad

Earn 3-6 credits and spend 2-8 weeks abroad on our summer programs

During the summer months, students have the opportunity to travel abroad through faculty-led programs.  These programs take students abroad for 2-8 weeks during the summer months of May, June, July or August offering a variety courses to all students.   Tuition, accommodation and fees will vary by program and each fall new programs are announced.  Past programs have taken students to study Spanish in Spain, Health Sciences in Australia, Pharmacy in Japan and Psychology in Greece and much more.  

Summer Abroad students will...

  • Earn 3+ academic credits while exploring a different culture with Duquesne Faculty.
  • Live abroad with Duquesne Students on programs from 2-8 weeks during the summer
  • Plan on program costs unique to each program, most are inclusive of flights, academic credits, accommodations, all cultural activities and most meals.

In the Spiritan tradition, we believe that our study abroad experiences should be accessible to all students, but some students believe that these experiences are not within their reach because they continue to struggle to afford the basic costs. This is where your donation and support come in and can help us offer scholarships that make studying abroad possible for all students. How can you help?

At Duquesne in Rome’s 10th birthday in 2010, a fundraising campaign was started to give the program an Endowed Fund to provide scholarship funds to Duquesne students who had financial hardships. In 2019, we were able to provide approximately $50,000 in extra scholarships to support Duquesne students because of generous donors, many connected to Â鶹ֱ²¥ and even our young alumni. We would like to extend these scholarship opportunities to students of color, students who are academically talented, and to heritage-seeking students to provide a richer, diverse experience for the Duquesne community abroad.

At our Rome campus, The Giving Tree is the Duquesne in Rome’s donor wall, where donors past and present are honored. Sculptor, Ferdinando Codognotto, famous for his wood carvings in the center of Rome near Piazza Navona, is the artist of The Giving Tree, a piece of living art at the campus where we honor donor past and present donors who have financially supported Duquesne students who wish to study a semester or summer in the Eternal City. Codognotto has sculpted for the likes of three Popes, Mother Theresa, and even Julia Roberts! An Experience of a Lifetime

Exploring Rome and traveling throughout Italy will be one of the highlights of your semester abroad. With Italy's rich culture and varied landscape, there is so much to explore and experience. Academic excursions and optional staff-lead mini-excursions provide many opportunities to explore the different regions of this beautiful country.

Students enrolled in Business classes have the opportunity to attend the Emilia-Romagna Academic Business Excursion, where they meet executives from companies like Barilla, as well as have experiential learning activities, like visiting a Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese factory in Parma, Italy.

All students attend included excursion to the town of Orvieto in Umbria. Students have private, guided lectures of the town and main cathedral with their Duquesne in Rome professors.

Intercultural competence is vital to your success in the 21st century. This certificate enhances many majors and is a great credential for employment in many fields, from business to education to health care.  Consider earning a certificate/minor in Intercultural Engagement. Scholarship Opportunities

The Center for Global Engagement is available to help you understand the costs of study abroad and assist you in applying for these various awards and opportunities.

Gilman Scholarships provide awards for study abroad for U.S. citizens who are receiving Pell Grants, a federal need-based financial aid grant under Title IV. This program is offered through the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State and is administered by the Institute of International Education . Selected recipients are awarded up to $5,000, depending on the length of their program to defray the costs of studying abroad.

 

Sponsored by the Association of Teachers of Japanese, Bridging Scholarships for Study in Japan provide scholarship assistance of up to $4,000 to qualified students for study at an eligible program in Japan.

 

Scholarships for study at any in the U.K.

Scholarships for Silver or Gold Award Girl Scouts to pursue foreign language study and study abroad.

Summer Only. Full funding for summer study of languages deemed critical by the U.S. government.

For students studying or doing research in Germany.

Freeman Awards for Study in Asia (Freeman-ASIA) provides scholarships for U.S. undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia.

Designed to support foreign language training and other academic studies abroad, this grant provides supplemental funds for American students who already are studying abroad under the auspices of an official study abroad program conducted by an accredited academic institution. GSF seeks to support a formative experience abroad for the recipient, who also must share this experience with others upon his or her return; ideally, with multiple audiences and varied media. We are particularly interested in funding the study of strategically significant countries and languages.

Awards for intensive summer or academic term study abroad in non-traditional destinations are offered to freshmen and sophomores to foster their interest in international affairs. Awards for an academic term or year in non-traditional destinations are offered to juniors and seniors to increase their knowledge of other languages and cultures. Please meet with the Study Abroad Advisor to discuss your plans and the application procedures.

Awards of varying lengths are offered to graduate students to pursue the study of languages and cultures deemed critical to U.S. national security. To be eligible, the student must be a U.S. citizen and either enrolled in or applying to a graduate program at an accredited U.S. college or university. Applications are typically due in the end of January for the following academic year.

Grants are designed to help support undergraduates as they seek knowledge and experience in their academic fields by studying broad. Fifty $1,000 grants are awarded each year.
Open to students who have a 3.75 GPA

The Young Ambassador Program is organized through the Friends of Saint Patrick organization and the Saint Patrick Centre. It is designed to promote a greater understanding of the shared cultural heritage of Northern Ireland in North America among those aged 20-25. Young Ambassadors will be selected to travel to Downpatrick and County Down, Ireland for 15 days in June to explore various aspects of the history and traditions of the island of Ireland and develop their own chosen cultural dissertations. They will complete their agreed dissertations when they go home and following a successful review will be formally made Young Ambassadors.

 

A Note for Parents

Over the years, studying abroad has become more popular yet it is still not the norm. But there are few jobs today that function at only local levels. As the world becomes ever more connected, globalized, and competitive, investing in time abroad is a monumental step toward becoming a global citizen and a mature adult.

Direct exposure to other cultures will teach your young adult things that can only be learned abroad and will inform and enhance the rest of their life.

There are many reasons Â鶹ֱ²¥ believes in graduating with both a local and global education and we hope that you, as a parent, encourage your student to become a citizen of the world. Together, we can provide a horizon-expanding education - and prepare them for anything.

  • Leaving home and venturing forth to another country empowers a young person and triggers a spurt of personal growth and self confidence like no other.
  • A study abroad experience can greatly strengthen the resume, for employers interpret the study abroad experience as a sure sign that a person takes on challenges and can function in a wide range of situations.
  • Become informed about your student's program of choice. A wonderful resource is this national student abroad handbook containing an almost exhaustive checklist guiding your analysis.
  • Encourage your student, guide your student, but do NOT do their preparatory work for them. Their attention to the necessary details involved in studying abroad is a vital part of their growth and is essential to a successful study abroad experience.
  • Attend the formal pre-departure orientation that the Center for Global Engagement runs for all students. All parents will receive an invitation. Your student will have the schedule for this orientation in their package of information. Whether or not you can attend, never hesitate to call us. We welcome your questions and concerns.
  • Consider visiting your student - the second half of the semester is a great time to go. By this time, students are settled in, comfortable with their surroundings, and knowledgeable guides. Having your son or daughter proudly act as your guide is a great moment as a parent.
