Â鶹ֱ²¥ will honor members of the 2024 graduating class at the annual winter commencement ceremony on Friday, Dec. 20, at 11 a.m. in the UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse. More than 300 students are graduating this semester.

A cherished tradition, Commencement at Duquesne goes beyond caps and gowns. It marks not only the academic achievements of graduates but also reflects the University’s mission to connect students with transformative opportunities; walk alongside them as they build a professional path with purpose; and encourage their growth as individuals ready to make a meaningful impact on the world.

An additional highlight of the event will be the bestowal of presidential medals by Duquesne President Ken Gormley to two extraordinary veterans:

  • , a 99-year-old U.S. Army veteran who was among the first Americans to arrive on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day, June 6, 1944. The Glenshaw, Pa., native served in the 4th Infantry Division and volunteered for the 531st Special Brigade. 
  • Jack Eckenrode, a 97-year-old Korean War veteran of the Air Force and 1950 Duquesne University alumnus who inspires many and was an , where he was the oldest athlete to compete in the 20k cycling road race and won his division. He recently authored the book, Road to 100: 10 Pillars for Strong and Happy Aging from a Senior Olympian Cyclist.

A doctoral hooding ceremony will be Thursday, Dec. 19, at 6 p.m. A Baccalaureate Mass will be held at 9 a.m. on Dec. 20, and .
