Biography
Lauren Gailey is a visiting assistant professor of law at the Thomas R. Kline School of Law of Â鶹ֱ²¥. She teaches civil procedure, appellate practice and procedure, and First Amendment: Freedom of Expression in the Modern Age. Her scholarly interests include federal and state constitutional law, procedural law and evidence, criminal procedure, and civil rights.
Before beginning her teaching career, Gailey was a member of Winston & Strawn’s Appellate & Critical Motions practice. She has been involved in all stages of litigation, from formulating strategy and analyzing legal issues to drafting briefs and arguing motions and appeals in courts across the country. Her experience includes high-profile, high-stakes matters spanning a wide variety of industries and areas of law. Most recently, she briefed and second-chaired oral argument in a securities-law appeal heard by the United States Supreme Court in the October 2023 Term.
Gailey served as a law clerk to Judge Thomas Hardiman (U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit), Judge Jeffrey Sutton (U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit), and Judge David Campbell (U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona), as well as the federal Judicial Conference’s Committee on Rules of Practice and Procedure. She earned her J.D. from Duquesne Kline, where she was Executive Articles Editor of the Duquesne Law Review and won several awards as a member of the Appellate Moot Court Board.
Gailey has taught First Amendment at Duquesne Kline and constitutional law at Chatham University as an adjunct professor. In law school, she was a research assistant to then-Dean Ken Gormley. And while clerking, she served as a teaching assistant to Judge Hardiman’s Advanced Constitutional Law: Current Issues course.
Gailey is a patron of the Carnegie Museum of Natural History and serves on the Pittsburgh Symphony’s Jack Heinz Advisory Board. A native of the Pittsburgh area, she lives in Crafton with her spouse.
