Music and Health

The Music and Health undergraduate minor is designed for undergraduate students currently enrolled in an undergraduate health care program at Â鶹ֱ²¥. This 15-credit program will prepare you to understand music as a cultural practice of health shaped by patients’ cultural values and as an art form responsive to multiple ecologies and communities.

The Music and Health minor is modular, with 11 elective credits spread across three broad content areas to ensure that you receive the training you will most benefit from.

Courses will provide:

  • Knowledge and skill development that can be directly and immediately applied into practice
  • Opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration in learning spaces that reflect the diversity of practice, philosophy, and approach of an interdisciplinary treatment team
  • Experiential and didactic instruction about music’s healing properties in a broad range of community and treatment settings
  • A deep understanding of the role that culture and context plays in how individuals conceptualize and engage with music

Why Choose a Music and Health Minor?

A person smiles in front of a yellow background.

The Music and Health minor provides a great opportunity for students in the Pre-Medical and Health Professions certificate to explore music-related avenues of patient treatment. It allows students to gain exposure in collaborative practice, and learn how music therapy can be utilized and incorporated into a future patient’s treatment plan.

Interested in music, but not sure about a minor?

You can register for certain classes a la carte (such as MUSR 101-Audio Industry Techniques) without having to complete an audition or commit to a minor in music. You are also welcome to participate in ensembles in the same fashion (seating auditions required).

If you are interested in non-credit music lessons, private instruction is available through City Music Center of Â鶹ֱ²¥, the community outreach division of the Mary Pappert School of Music.
